We have had a fantastic growing day today! The children have worked really hard to completely prepare our growing area for spring planting and now, I am sure you will agree, the area looks very smart. Kestrels class have started to create a sensory flower area on their decking. They have also helped Hawks class to weed, dig over and mix new compost into our raised beds and begin planting. Eagles class worked brilliantly in teams to create bamboo cane structures to support the growth of our peas and beans. Today we have planted carrots, chard, radishes, spinach, strawberries, broad beans, purple and green mangetout, runner beans, peas and sweetcorn. We have also tended to our existing raspberry and strawberry plants. Barn Owls and Owls children have been busy planting in their outdoor area too. Let's cross our fingers and hope the weather warms up soon allowing our plants to flourish and produce bumper crops!
All the children have planted a sunflower seed that they will be caring for at home in order to take part in a 'grow the tallest sunflower competition' (see letter that came home with their planted seeds). We will ask your child to measure their sunflower in the last week of term and the person with the tallest sunflower will win a prize! Please keep us in touch with the progress of your sunflowers.
Thank you so much to all of you who donated seeds, plants and compost, it really was very much appreciated as without your donations the children would not have such a wide range of plants to watch grow and hopefully to harvest. We still have lots of seeds to plant and tomatoes and cucumbers to grow in our green house when the weather warms up a bit, so thanks to your donations gardening club have lots to keep them busy this term. We are also very grateful to the parents who gave up their time to help us, thank you very much.
Happy growing everyone!
