Years 1 & 2, Kestrels

Welcome to Kestrels Class with Key Stage 1 pupils aged 5-7 years old. Kestrels Class is taught by Mrs Odhams everyday. Miss Snowden is our teaching assistant on a Monday and Tuesday and Mrs Wesley is our teaching assistant on a Wednesday, Thursday Friday.

We have PE on a Wednesday and a Friday, please come to school in PE kit on these days.

Reading books are sent home on a Friday. Please return these books on the following Thursday so that they can be quarantined over the weekend. Spellings and homework are set using the Google Classroom platform every Tuesday. The children will have their spelling test on the following Monday. Please read with your child daily and practise their sounds and tricky words.

Kestrels have enjoyed having crazy hair to spread the smiles for Comic Relief this Friday. They brought in some of their best jokes to tell each other and spread the smiles even further.

The Kestrels have continued to work very hard for their elf this week, writing him their best Christmas shopping list and designing him a new sleigh. Some of their sleighs had built in lunch boxes, wrapping stations, Satellite Navigation and even teleportation devices!

Kestrels have been very excited this week as a mysterious elf has come to visit their classroom! They had to write him lots of questions to find out all about him. When he replied they then had to write what they found out about him. Let’s hope they carry on working hard for him!

Kestrels have enjoyed continuing to learn about Vlad the flea in Literacy this week and have been acting out the story with puppets during our ‘Learn to grow’ time. They have enjoyed thinking about the diets of different animals; identifying whether they are herbivores, carnivores or omnivores. Well done Kestrels keep it up!

Kestrels have been enjoying our new story to focus on for Literacy this week called Vlad and the Great fire of London. They have been acting different parts of the story out whilst applying their own historical knowledge of the event. They have also enjoyed hearing the story from someone elses viewoint.

The Kestrels have been very busy finishing their Great Fire of London Houses this week as well as writing their own poems. They have had time for quiet reflection during their yoga lesson and enjoyed joining Mrs Sharpe’s virtual online Remembrance assembly.

Kestrels have been learning all about Guy Fawkes and the gunpowder plot this week, they have enjoyed being history detectives and finding out about the problems the plotters had. They have also learnt firework poems by heart and performed them. As well as all that they have made firework art and attempted some animation work.

Kestrels have continued to work hard all week despite being a little tired! Koalas have been learning and writing about different types of trucks whilst Pandas have been finishing writing their animal stories in Literacy. They are thoroughly enjoying learning all about the Great Fire of London and have designed their own house from 1666. They have started making these with great enthusiasm.

As well as their amazing work in Literacy and Maths this week, the Kestrels have been learning about coding in computing. They have been generating their own characters, backgrounds making them grow and shrink. Meanwhile in art they have learning about a Japanese artist called Yayoi Kusama who is obsessed with polka dots!

In Kestrels this week we have been practising and recalling the ways to make 10/20. We have been using part models to split numbers apart and checking our answers carefully. Following their work on ‘Pandora’s box’ Pandas group have started to design and describe their own special boxes. Koalas group have been writing their own funny animal stories, inspired by the Tiger who Came to Tea, where an animal visits their home, causes chaos and then leaves. Don’t forget to ask your child about their very amusing ideas!

Kestrels have been very busy during Literacy this week. The Koala group has been learning all about a story called Billy’s Bucket and tried to write an alternative ending for it. Meanwhile, the Panda group have been learning about the mysterious myth of Pandora’s box. Bit by bit the story has been revealed whilst the children have had to predict what the box may have looked like and what was inside!

The Kestrels loved having Harold visit again this week with our ‘in house’ Life Ed lesson. They were experts on our feelings and recognising how they make our bodies feel. They also learnt about how eating healthy food to give us lots of energy and where it travels through the digestive system. Finally they discussed how important it is to have a good sleep to keep us happy and in a good mood.

This week we have been learning about the story of ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’. Year One have been using puppets to pretend to be the caterpillar eating the food in the story and writing his diary! Meanwhile Year Two have begun to plan and rewrite their own version of the story with a different character like ‘The Very Hungry Worm’ and changing the fruits. We have also had a fabulous time at our mindfulness session learning different breathing techniques.

In Kestrels, throughout our literacy sessions this week, we have had a strong focus on our mental wellbeing. We have thought carefully about different emotions, their causes and effects and some strategies to help us deal them. We have enjoyed learning about ‘The Colour Monster’ and all his emotions. We have been drawing our own ‘feeling’ monsters and writing about when we feel different emotions.
